Google will launch the much-anticipated Pixel 9 series on August 13th, a little earlier than usual. The devices are expected to come with a number of upgrades, including a new design language. A new report from Android Authority suggests that an exciting new upgrade is coming to the Pixel 9 series.
According to the publication, citing sources familiar with the matter, the Pixel 9 series will use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead of the optical sensor found in previous versions such as the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. The upgrade will include all models: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and the debut Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Pixel Fold 2, on the other hand, will not have one. Instead, a capacitive fingerprint sensor may be integrated into the home button.
The move to ultrasonic is already expected, but what's even more interesting is that Google is opting for the same device that's on the Galaxy S24 series, including the Ultra model. It's called Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008). The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S24 series is already known to be fast and reliable, unlike the optical fingerprint sensor that attracted criticism on previous Pixel smartphones.
The publication also states that the Pixel 6 and later models use an optical fingerprint sensor from Goodix. While holding the device in place, it often felt slower and less accurate than the ultrasonic sensor, and hand moisture was also an issue when unlocking the screen.
Another annoying factor with the optical fingerprint sensor is using it in dark environments, since the sensor is used to being hit by light if it's not fully covered.
It's heartening to see the Pixel 9 series finally do away with it and pack in a brand new ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and other nifty upgrades, one of which is the brand new pink colorway that was recently leaked in some hands-on videos. All three Pixel phones are expected to be unveiled next month.
