When was the last time a mid-range phone got this much attention?

AI SUMMARY

  • Nothing’s sub-brand, CMF, is teasing its inaugural smartphone, the CMF Phone 1.
  • The teasers so far suggest that the phone will feature a rotary dial and an exposed screw on its back.
  • The CMF Phone 1 is expected to hit the Indian market with a retail price of Rs 19,999 (~$240).

Launching a product with a unique design like the Nothing Phone or through an attractive marketing strategy doesn't make a name for itself. This time the excitement revolves around the upcoming launch of a new smartphone from its sub-brand CMF by Nothing.

The company recently confirmed that the release of the CMF Phone 1 is on the way, but now a teaser video has added fuel to the fire. The video showcases what appears to be a rotating jog wheel and a round cap that can be unscrewed, hinting at the unique features set for this mystery phone.

While the video leaves a lot of room for speculation, a concept render posted by X/Twitter user Rahul Janardhanan could provide a reasonable interpretation of what we can expect from the phone.

The concept image shows the back of the phone, with a rotating knob in the bottom right corner and a removable screw in the bottom left corner. While these elements could be purely aesthetic, current rumors suggest that they could be part of a lock/unlock mechanism that would allow users to easily swap out accessories or back covers of different colors.

If true, this could be a truly standout feature of the CMF Phone 1 in the current smartphone space, where most manufacturers have settled on a standard non-removable back design.

CMF Phone 1 details leak
Meanwhile, 91mobiles reports that the CMF Phone 1 will be available in India for around ₹19,999 (roughly $240) for the 6GB/128GB model. This is in line with previous reports that positioned the phone as an affordable mid-range option.

Speculation suggests that the CMF Phone 1 may be an improved version of the Nothing Phone 2a, with a slightly less powerful processor and without the Glyph LED interface. For comparison, the base model of the Nothing Phone 2a starts at ₹23,999 (approximately $290) in India.

It seems unlikely that the CMF Phone 1 will be officially launched in the US market, but there is nothing that could offer US buyers the opportunity to purchase the phone through alternative channels, as is the case with the Nothing Phone 2a. With the phone's launch seemingly approaching, we don't have to wait too long to see how the CMF Phone 1 performs.
